Everyday Intelligence and the Rise of the NAitives.
I recently embarked on an exhilarating expedition across the generational landscape of Artificial Intelligence. The journey began in the echo chambers of an innovation conference - two days filled with the promise of all things future. A land where the air buzzed with the hum of Ai as if it were a sacred incantation, a chorus singing the praises of algorithms and analytics, with CEO's crooning to goose their stock and everyone else snapping their fingers to the new jazz in town. Out of the whole two days I found one solitary seminar that dared not to preach to the altar of artificial intelligence. It was a deserted land.
Fast forward a few days, and I found myself in a markedly different part of town - a student graduation show. Here, the air was electric with innovation, yet the word 'Ai' was conspicuously absent. Ai was everywhere and nowhere. It whispered in the wings but never took central stage. These digital natives or 'nAitives' if you will, had woven Ai so seamlessly into the fabric of their creations that it was invisible - a ghost in the machine, a silent partner in their dance of innovation. The Ai was present, yet it allowed the students’ talents to shine through.
This experience highlighted a fascinating cultural shift. At the conference, AI was celebrated as a groundbreaking achievement, a testament to human ingenuity. In contrast, at the graduation show, it was used effortlessly by the nAitives, as natural and essential as the air they breathe. Essential but unremarkable. For these students, AI had transformed from a novel concept into a fundamental tool, signalling a progressive shift in education towards the three 'A's' of Algorithm, Analytics, and Automation.
Whatever the state of the curriculum, the nAitives are rewriting the script, directing a play where Ai is not the star, but the stage itself. This is a world where Ai no longer demands the spotlight but prefers the shadow, empowering not overpowering. A world where artificial intelligence has become so old hat it's just known as 'Everyday Intelligence' or 'Ei' or maybe one day in the not too distant future 'i.'
Whether you're a seasoned Ai enthusiast or a budding nAitive the most powerful use lies not in its mention but in its mastery. While the students are currently leading the innovative dance there is an open invitation for everyone to join in, learn a few steps and tear up the dancefloor.
